A 17-year-old student at East Hampton High School was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge on Oct. 20 after he punched Assistant Principal Keith Malsky in face, fracturing his jaw, East Hampton Town police said on Oct. 25.
Police did not release the young man's name because, Det. Lt. Chris Anderson said, he is eligible for youthful offender status in court. The student, a senior at the high school, was charged with third-degree assault, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. When police searched him that morning they found "a green leafy substance in his pants pocket, which field tested positive for marijuana," according to the arrest report.
According to Adam S. Fine, the principal at the high school, the district would not be commenting on the matter.
The defendant was released with an appearance ticket and was arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court on Oct. 27.
