Cops: Drunken Driver Nabbed After Afternoon Accident on New Year's Eve

• Luis Alberto Loja Guizhpe, 22, of East Hampton, was arrested on drunken driving charges on New Year's Eve, and it turned out he had been involved in an accident earlier in the town.

Village police said they saw a Honda with its trunk opening while it was being driven in the shoulder of Main Street, near Mill Hill Lane, at about 4:24 p.m. The officer stopped the car and found that the driver appeared intoxicated. He failed roadside sobriety tests, but refused to submit to a chemical breath test or blood test.

Town police also responded because the man's car fit the description of a vehicle involved in an accident on Route 114 that left the scene at 4:13 p.m. A woman was driving a 2013 Toyota south, near South Breeze Drive, when she was approached from behind at a high rate of speed. Her car was rear ended, causing damage. No one was hurt.

Loja Quizhpe was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and driving on the shoulder, consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, failure to produce an insurance card, and unlicensed operator, all violations. He was also issued a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident. After arraignment, he was released the next day on $500 bail.

• A 31-year-old East Quogue woman was arrested on drug charges during a traffic stop in East Hampton Village on Dec. 30 at about 11:30 a.m. Police said they were on a routine patrol when they saw a 2003 Honda Accord headed north on Main Street with flags handing from the rear view mirror, obstructing the driver's view. The officer stopped the Honda just north of Citarella's on Pantigo Road, and smelled marijuana coming from inside the car.

The driver admitted to having some marijuana in the ash tray and in the rear pocket of the front passenger seat. Police searched the car and found cigar paper rolled up containing a green leafy substance in the ash tray, a glass jar with two baggies of a similar substance, one marijuana processing grinder with the substance in it, and an EZ-wider packet of cigarette rolling papers. They also found, however, a small tin container with two yellow tablets of Percocet.

She told police she had the pain killers for pain she has from a prior accident, but she wasn't able to provide documentation that they were prescribed for her.

The woman was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh-degree, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. She was released on $250 bail.
