Cops: Audi Driver Leads Officers on Chase

East Hampton Town police call off pursuit when it got too dangerous.

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• Nichlolas J. Smith, 19, of East Hampton, was arrested after police said he drove a 2012 Audi erratically on Stephen Hands Path in East Hampton on July 4. Police said he as speeding and drove in and out of oncoming traffic, passing cars on the left unsafely at about 7 .

Police tried to pull him over, but he made an unsafe turn onto Route 114 toward Sag Harbor, where he led police on a high speed chase, reaching speeds greater than 100 mph, according to the report. Police said he forced other vehicles off the road in both directions. Officers decided that the pursuit was too dangerous to continue, and they stopped following him.

The Sag Harbor Village Police Department was notified and located the Audi parked on Meadowbrook Way. Smith was sitting in the back seat, they said. East Hampton Town police charged him with reckless driving and fleeing a motor vehicle in the third-degree, both misdemeanors, at about 8 p.m.

Smith was released with an appearance ticket and will be arraigned in East Hampton Justice Court on Aug. 7.

Editor's Note: The driver of the Audi is 19, not 26 at previously reported.
