Coast Guard Video Shows Part of Montauk Fisherman's 'Amazing' Rescue

John Aldridge was floating in the water for 12 hours before search parties found him Wednesday afternoon.

A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod has recorded the daring rescue of John Aldridge, a lobster fishermen who went overboard while on night watch off of Montauk Point.

Aldridge was spotted 43 miles south of Montauk Point, thought his boat was five miles off Montauk when his fellow crew members reported him missing on Wednesday morning at 6 a.m.

An eight-and-a-half hour search of a 660-square-mile area ended just after 3 p.m. when Aldridge was found alive and retrieved out of the water.

“The search and rescue coordination between the Coast Guard, its partner agencies and fishermen was exceptional. The fishing crews allowed us to search a much greater area,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason Walter, the officer in charge of Station Montauk. “To find this man in the water after this much time is amazing.”
