A bullet was found on the floor in the on Tuesday morning, launching the school's emergency management plan, though school officials believe a staff member brought it in by accident.

"As part of the plan’s procedures, the matter was referred to the East Hampton Police Department school’s representative, Officer [Kim] Notel," Casale wrote. "After a complete locker search was conducted, no other evidence of any kind was found."

"After looking into the matter further, we believe one of our staff members wore his hunting jacket and that the bullet fell out of the pocket. After speaking with the employee, we believe this to be true," Casale said.

He said parents could rest-assured that the school is a safe environment and that student's safety was not threatened.

Superintendent Michael Hartner said a student found the bullet first thing in the morning and Casale was soon informed. "I think we handled the whole incident properly," Hartner said.

The bullet was not extended, meaning it had never been shot. No holes were found in the windows, either.

Hartner declined to speak about whether the staff member was reprimanded or not.
