Badly decomposed body found near the old Bell Estate in Amagansett.

A headless and badly decomposed body washed up on the shores of in Amagansett on Sunday, police said.

According to Chief Ed Ecker, the body was discovered by a person walking along a portion of the beach just southeast of the area's well-known Bell Estate.

Ecker said the town police dive team is searching the waters of Gardiner's Bay for the body's missing skull.

"No one is missing in our jurisdiction," Ecker said. "But judging by how badly it was decomposed, the body could be from anywhere."

The Suffolk County medical examiner was called to the scene, Ecker said.

The beach between Big Albert's and Barnes Landing was closed off by police tape for a few hours as police searched the area for any related evidence, such as skin, Ecker said.
