UPDATE: 14-year-old Bicyclist Dies After Car Crash in East Hampton Village

Police say the girl was pinned under an SUV; According to one bystander, she and the bike were dragged 20 feet.

The 14-year-old girl who was hit by a vehicle while riding her bicycle in East Hampton Village has died from her injuries, according to Village Police Lt. Tony Long.

Long said police would not release the girl's name immediately, giving her family time to notify relatives.

The girl was pinned under a Ford Explorer in the middle of Pantigo Road, which is part of Montauk Highway, at the intersection of Gay Lane, at about 1:25 p.m. Six to eight "Good Samaritans" helped to free her, police said in a statement on Saturday evening.

The East Hampton Village Ambulance Association transported her to East Hampton Airport to meet a Medevac that flew her to Stony Brook University Medical Center. She died at the hospital, police said.

The girl's mother and teenaged brother arrived at the scene shortly after the ambulance already left for the airport. Police took them to the hospital.

The driver of the motor vehicle, a 73-year-old woman, was not injured but appeared visibly shaken up at the scene. Her SUV was impounded for a safety inspection, which is standard in all accidents involving serious physical injury and death, police said. Long said she will receive a ticket for a traffic violation. No arrest has been made.

The investigation is ongoing. Police asked that anyone who witnessed the accident who has not already spoken to police should contact detectives at 631-324-0777.

, 1:25 p.m.: A teenaged bicyclist was struck on Pantigo Road, in front of the First United Methodist Church Street and the Post Office in East Hampton on Saturday afternoon.

The 14-year-old girl was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of her injuries, Village Police Chief Jerry Larsen said from the scene. She was semi-conscious, he said.

The bicycle could still be seen under the sport utility vehicle, which came to a stop in the middle of the roadway.

Three men, according to police, lifted the vehicle, a Ford Explorer, off the girl after the accident at about 1:25 p.m.

"Both were in the roadway. We're trying to figure out what happened," said Lt. Tony Long said. The Explorer was facing west.

Jonathan Turner, a bystander who is visiting from California, said the bicyclist was dragged under the vehicle about 20 feet. He was standing in front of CVS pharmacy when the accident occurred. He though both the driver of the vehicle and the bicyclist were trying to turn left into the post office and pharmacy parking lots.

Pantigo Road was shut down from the windmill to Egypt Lane, while detectives investigated.
