2 Drivers Slapped With DWI Charges After Crash on Napeague

Detectives investigation three-car crash.

Two drivers whose vehicles collided on the Napeague Stretch on Sunday morning, leaving them with serious injuries, were driving drunk, according to East Hampton Town police.

Nicole Zizelis, 51, of Amagansett, was headed west on Montauk Highway, near Napeague Meadow Road, when her 2010 Honda Accord struck a 2008 Jeep Wrangler, which Hari Kalyan, 33, of Brooklyn, was driving east at about 3:10 a.m., police said. An eastbound 2006 Ford taxi cab then collided with Kalyan's Jeep, while attempting to avoid the accident scene, police said.

Police said Zizelis and Kalyan suffered serious injuries. A Medevac helicopter transported Kaylan to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The Amagansett Fire Department responded with heavy rescue equipment to get the drivers out of the vehicle. The fire department's ambulance crews treated both drivers, and transported Zizelis to Southampton Hospital.

The drivers were charged with driving while intoxicated, misdemeanors, and released on appearance tickets due to their injuries. They will be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court at a later date.

The taxi cab driver, Muhammad Fahim, 27, of Islandia, was not injured, police said.

All of the vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are continuing to investigate. They ask that anyone who may have witnessed the crash contact East Hampton Town Police Department at 631-537-7575.
