Summer Soundtrack Gets Going

Music helps us remember our good times. What musical memories will you make?

I'd bet that this has happened to you. You're on your way to work, thinking about where you're going to get your coffee and still be on time, when you hear a snippet of a song. It's not necessarily a well-crafted song, probably a top 40 from years ago. Still, it packs some power. It comes at you and pulls you right back into the Summer of ___.   You can feel the sun caressing your skin.  An ocean breeze riffles your hair. You have your toes in the sand. A smile grows on your face.

Music affects us. I believe we each have soundtracks of our lives.  Some of our happiest and saddest moments are attached to tunes surrounding us at those times.  A ballad from freshman year in High School can make us feel both the angst and the carelessness of then.  The opening strains of 10cc's "I'm not in Love" puts me back in a peasant shirt and cut offs at .  We love hearing the tunes that help us remember the good times.  My husband made the arrangement of "Hot, Hot, Hot" that brought to the world.  People are always telling him that they think of happy times when they hear his first piano tickles on that tune.

Whether it be party tunes like that or "Moonlight Senata", we should envelope ourselves with melodies that can enrich and preserve our wonderful times. We are fortunate to be in a beautiful town. Not only that, we are lucky to have so many musical talents, both resident and visiting. Therefore, we have many lovely spots (pricey to inexpensive) that offer a view and live music.

It's going to be a wonderful Summer. Let's give it a great soundtrack!

Let Me Know:  What's your best musical memory from the past and what do you think will be your song this summer?

Nice job PJ! My fondest memory was standing at the Cloisters, staring at the Hudson River right after High School graduation, the summer of 1970. Someone had a radio and the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" came on and brought with it infinite possibilities about the future. That became my personal high school song. This summer song is "Edge of Glory" by Lady Gaga. Hearing the sax of Clarence Clemmons right before he left us, well, doesn't that sum up the later years perfectly? Have a great summer PJ. You are off to a great start.

Another recently strong memory, however sad, was hearing the old song "Wonderful Summer" and singing it to my cat Tewa as we stared into eachother's eyes. This was about a year before he died two years ago Labor Day weekend with his brother. The memory brings tears. So we can have happy or sad memories in the soundtrack to our life. When I hear that song now, I pull out his picture and stare into his eyes and cry...then grab one of my new cats and try to do the same thing. Sing and stare.

The entire Fleetwood Mac "Rumors" album (I bet it was a cassette!) - driving aimlessly in Springs and Napeague and Amagansett, talking about boys and sex.

I hope we can take the music and memories to Heaven. What a waste of musical knowledge and all knowledge in general to just kick off. LOL.

If there's a rock and roll heaven... they have a hell of a band.

Hi PJ! George and I are just back from a visit to London, Berlin and St. Petersburg, Russia. Congrats on the blog and the great music performed by the Thieves. We wish we were in Montauk listening to the summer songs. One of our favorites is "Sweet Caroline", oldie but goodie! All the best to Joey and the Thieves! Your HH friends, George and Mary Anne

Mary Anne, There is a kickass singer here, Nancy Atlas that sings Sweet Caroline a lot and she always gets the audience singing. You could come to Montauk and make more memories
