Community Corner
Stony Brook @ Southampton
Is there any way that this community can write letters to the STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM asking them to re evaluate & to re think the South Hampton campus which is quite magnificent & is a solid facility not to mention the convenience being so close in proximity to the LIRR as a place where undergraduate programs can be offered as well....it seems almost ELITIST that the facility is reserved for only GRADUATE DEGREES IN OCEANOGRAPHY & MARINE BIOLOGY....Granted, The Study of Oceanography & Marine Biology are important in terms of our understanding & coupled with environmental studies is very important but there are many local youngsters & residents who for specific reasons do not go away to college and need to remain home or work part time or work & have families....Why can't Stony Brook @ South Hampton service this population offering them an opportunity to attend BA Degree programs on a part time basis....This baffles me because it is so much needed especially in today's economy....There is so much wealth & affluence in this area & developers who build multi million dollar homes & mental health facilitis for the wealthy & benefactors funding the arts, writing programs at Southampton during the Summer, & so many other charities that none of these movers & shakers see the need of a 4year college that can provide degree programs for those who want to attend school on a full time or part time commuter basis.....I don't quite understand....they can even partner up with Empire College which is a SUNY 4 year School & Graduate Degree offering Institution that has a Facility in Riverhead that offers On Line & On Site Classes except that their Laboratory Facilities are limited....So much can be done yet so little is done to help people......
