Question: Remember the Bad Fires in East Hampton History?

All these fires recently has got us thinking about the ones we've tried to forget.

When that fire whistle blows, everyone thinks the same thing: I hope it's not the big one. Whether you are a volunteer firefighter or EMT, the fire department chaplain, a police officer, or just somebody who knows what that high pitched sound is for, you start hoping everyone gets back to the firehouse safe and sound.

There's been a lot of fires recently. First, the fire that destroyed , then a at homes, one of which , and last week a that was believed to have been . Then last night, five firefighters were treated for noxious fumes inhalation after a .

Do all these bad fires remind you of ones we tried to forget? So many of our readers have a great institutional knowledge of East Hampton's history. Do you remember the Belle Estate fire? Share your stories about great saves on behalf of the fire departments, too.

There was a fire several years ago in Georgica. I believe a mother and her child died in that fire.

Private plane crash in NW Woods set the whole woods on fire. You could see the fire from 3 Mile Harbor Dock. A restaurant across from (Schlarkys?) gas station on MTK. Hwy. Wow, I feel old lol.

I was the first truck out of the barn because I was all dressed for duck hunting. When I got there there was a lot of smoke. I smelled an oder like somenoe searing the feathers off a chicken. The mother and daughter were found two feet from the window! Mother was laying ontop of the child. They were over cum by super heated air. They had rented the house from Mr A.T. Fat and the lease was over. They cleaned out the fire place ashes that night and put them in the garbage next to the house! Then there was the Greene fire on Georgica Rd that happened while a Jewish wedding was taking place on the front lawn! A propane tank blew up. One of our fireman rescued their wedding loot from the bedroom!

I think last year or the year before there was a fatal house fire on Springs Fireplace Rd where the homeowner lost his life. A couple of years ago a woman was found deceased in a house fire on Manor Lane in Springs. Also, the 1986 Hither Hills brush fire sent Montauk firefighters to the hospital after they were hit by Amagansett and then North Sea fire trucks who couldnt see through the dense smoke.

The one that stands out in my mind was when the Gym at the Amagansett School burned down.I got a weeks work helping with the cleanup, smelled like smoke for a month. But mostly it sticks with me because of all the basketball I played there in that old dingy court and then it was gone.Like losing a friend!!
