Community Corner

local philanthropy.

I think it very admirable that Alec Baldwin donated one million dollars to the East Hampton library Children's wing addition. Great cause. A great library. Good actor. Cares about local issues. But I must say I was quite disturbed to read today in a local paper that The Retreat, domestic violence shelter, does not have a proper generator! Are you kidding me?! Unacceptable. And other community places as well, also lacking generators. Why are these places, especially a crisis shelter, hello, not being recipients of generous donations?  I worked at that shelter and let me tell you, they need many things, but a generator to ensure women and children and shelter employees are not groping around in the dark, is imperative! Let us as a Town get right on this. While a children's wing at the library is lovely, a generator at The Retreat is necessary. I cannot help but think, yes care about the people less off in far away places, The Philippenes typhoon is a terrible tragedy. And hurricane  Sandy, just last year,  took many victims right on this Island and in the Rockaway's, Breezy Point, and Long Beach area, which still has not recovered completely, or gotten back into their homes. And when our local shelters and community buildings need generators, what is the problem? Start a fundraiser for the people who sought shelter here. You need not look any further than your own backyard.
