This is the first of what I hope will be many blogs regarding primarily family and youth activities in Montauk. Through my involvement with Montauk Youth, Inc. and the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation, I try to make it my business to find out about all of the activities for our youth and families happening in and around Montauk!
A little bit about Montauk Youth, Inc....
Montauk Youth's mission is to organize affordable and accessible recreational and cultural activities for the youth of Montauk. Montauk Youth Inc. seeks to provide this programming by organizing activities outright and by working with other youth groups in Montauk and with the Town of East Hampton to fill gaps in community youth programming. We are a nonprofit, all-volunteer, organization that has been organizing activities for the youth of Montauk for over 40 years. Membership is open to all. Programs are funded through a grant from the Town of East Hampton and through nominal participation fees.
Just this fall, over 50% of the Montauk School population is participating in Soccer, Flag Football and Spirit Squad programs offered by Montauk Youth. In addition, throughout the school year Montauk Youth organizes T-Ball, rollerskating, dance and yoga programs, LEGO robotics classes, and more for Montauk students. We participate in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, and organize family skate nights, bowling nights, a Mother's Day 5K, and a trip to New York City as well.
Montauk Youth feels strongly about building community spirit and works with other local groups where possible to bring community-wide events to Montauk. We collaborate with the Montauk Village Association on our Scarecrow Days (scarecrows will start popping up throughout Montauk in the coming days), with Concerned Citizens of Montauk on our Annual Field Day (October 14), and with the Montauk Chamber of Commerce on the first-ever Street Painting Festival to be held October 7 (more on that below).
Yes, I'm tooting Montauk Youth's horn here, but I am very proud of what this all-volunteer group has accomplished and thankful to the many volunteers who make it all happen. The organization has been around for a long time, and it's inspiring to see parents who have grown up with Montauk Youth now participating in our programs with their own children.
Now on to the Street Painting Festival....
Montauk Youth, Inc. is planning a one-day Street Painting Festival for Sunday, October 7 in downtown Montauk during the Montauk Chamber of Commerce's Fall Festival weekend. We invite local artists and students from East End schools to participate in this inspiring activity. Painting will begin at 10am when Main Street is closed for festivities and take place throughout the day. Part of the fun is watching the art unfold!
Montauk Youth will provide the street paint (which is really chalk and pastels) and will assign a 5' x 5' square marked off on the pavement, and participants will provide the creativity.
Street painting dates back to Italy and the 1600s, where traveling artists known as i Madonnari replicated famous works of art on streets out of chalk. Google street painting and you'll find hundreds of festival and artist sites. Much of the work is extraordinary.
Participants are asked to commit by Monday, October 1 (visit montaukyouth.org for contact information).
