Keeping cool with and without air conditioning

Summer is coming and our first heat wave is on it's way. Follow these tips to stay cool: Install a programmable thermostat and program it to automatically turn back the cooling when you're not home or when you're sleeping. Set the thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher if you use ceiling fans. Clean filters. Check air conditioner filters monthly or as recommended by the manufacturer. Clean or replace them as needed. Use the auto fan setting. Buy an energy star air conditioner. Have an air-conditioning technician or energy auditor determine which unit is the right size for your space, especially if you're replacing a central air-conditioning unit. Think about using fans to circulate air and keep shades and blinds down to keep the sunlight out during the day.
