Top 10 Hamptons Home Sales of 2012 Revealed

Town & Country real estate reports that East Hampton dominated the charts for the Most Expensive Sale of 2012 in the Hamptons.

Town & Country Real Estate has compiled the rankings of the Hamptons' most expensive home sales of 2012, and while an estate in Southampton Village tops the list, East Hampton dominated the chart with 6 of the top 10 positions.

But the oceanfront mansion at 322 Meadow Ln. was sold for $28.5 million to beer magnate Alejandro Santo Domingo Davila, who Forbes magazine ranks as the 97th richest person in the world, and the second richest man in Colombia.

The sale squeezed 174 Further Ln., East Hampton, out of the top spot by just $500,000.

Coming in third, 43 Surfside Dr. in Bridgehampton sold for $27.3 million According to The Real Deal, the estate had belonged to divorce lawyer Irving Shafran, book editor Judith Shafran, and the couple's daughter, restaurateur Pamela Schein. The buyer is an anonymous LLC.

In fourth place is a property at 30 Lee Ave. in East Hampton, which sold for $25.75 million. The $25 million sale of 25 Highway Behind The Pond in East Hampton came in fifth.

At number six on the list is 20 Drew Ln., East Hampton, the oceanfront estate that Independent East End publisher Jerry Della Femina made headlines by saying he was selling off before the end of 2012 to avoid higher taxes under President Barack Obama. The property sold for nearly $24.7 million.

Other East Hampton Town properties on the list include 6 Gracie Ln. in East Hampton and 54 Highway Behind The Pond Lane, both of which sold for $20 million, and 8 Five Rod Hwy. in Wainscott, which sold for $18.6 million.

"2012 was a good year for high-end home sales, but frankly nowhere near the top," states Town & Country's report. "2007 was the height of the high-end trades starting with Ron Barron’s ceiling-shattering purchase of the deMenil Carpenter 40 acres oceanfront in East Hampton for a record total of $103 million. This was actually two recorded sales that held the #1 and #2 positions at $58 million for 260 Further Lane and $45 million for 278 Further Lane."

Back in 2007, according to Town & Country, the top seven sales were all more than $30 million, which would place 2012's title holder in the 2007's number 8 slot.

Town & Country points out that while only four out of the top 10 in 2012 were oceanfront properties, and the rest were in-land, typically oceanfront and bayfront properties make up eight out of 10.
