East Hampton Library Recommends 10 Christmas Books for Kids

Give the gift of reading this holiday season.

How about giving a book as a Christmas gift? 's Alexandra Giambruno, who is the head of Children's Services, and Lisa Houston, the Young Adult Librarian, have these suggestions for the younger readers you might know.

1. Little Robin’s Christmas by Jan Fearnley – Having given away all his warm vests to his cold animal friends during the week before Christmas, Little Robin receives a special reward from Santa.

2. One Snowy Night by M. Christina Butler – One snowy Christmas, a cold little hedgehog gets a special present from Father Christmas.

3. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus: Based on a true story by Christopher J. Plehal -  In 1897 New York City, a young girl who knows that Santa Claus exists sets out to prove her case to unbelievers by writing a letter to the editor of the New York Sun.

4. Truffle’s Christmas by Anna Currey – Because of his unselfishness, a little mouse has his Christmas wishes fulfilled by Santa.

5. Little Rabbit’s Christmas by Harry Horse – When the Christmas Rabbit makes his wish come true, Little Rabbit learns that even the best gift is better when shared.

6. The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore –This classic illustrated poem captures the magic of a cozy home being visited by a jolly Santa, coming down the chimney with a bagful of toys.

7. Morris’s Disappearing Bag: a Christmas story by Rosemary Wells – Morris is disappointed with the less-than-exciting stuffed bear he gets for Christmas, but delighted with an overlooked package which makes him turn invisible.

8. How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss – Although the Grinch forms a devious plan to stop Christmas from coming, he realizes something new--that maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store.

9. Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad!  By Mercer Mayer - Little Critter approaches Christmas with the intention of being a good helper, but every funny illustration shows him as tangled up as the Christmas lights.

10. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg - An old-fashioned steam train takes children to the North Pole on Christmas Eve to meet Santa and see him off on his annual sleigh ride.
