Southampton Hospital will host what it hopes will be a community conversation next month about mental health needs on the East End.

Sponsored with the East End Clinical Connection, panelists will address the issues of accessing mental health care. The panel is convening on Oct. 8 during National Mental Health Awareness Week, which is Oct. 6 to 12.

Richard Lawless, who offers pastoral counseling, will moderate the panel, which will include Michael Stoltz, a social worker who is the executive director of Clubhouse of Suffolk, Alexandra Feely, a social worker at The Retreat and the East Hampton Healthcare Center, Dr. Lois R. Favre, superintendent of the Bridgehampton School District, Virginia St. John, a social worker and director of East End DBT and a member of the East Hampton Disability Advisory Board, and Steven Chassman, a social worker and substance abuse counselor who is the clinical director LICADD and The Poets of Well Being.

"We are pleased to be cooperating with Southampton Hospital in marking this important occasion," Nancy Beckett-Lawless, co-chair of the East End Clinical Connection, said.

The East End Clinical Connection is an organization providing behavioral health treatment services to residents living on the East End.

The discussion will take place in Parrish Memorial Hall on Herrick Road at the corner of Lewis Street in Southampton on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Space is limited, and registration in advance is recommended. Leave a message with Dolores Keller at the Seafield Center at (631) 569-7335 to reserve a seat.

What do you think of the mental health services available on the East End? Are they adequate or can more be done? Tell us in the comments below.

Affordable & Good Quality Mental Health services Are Definitely needed out Here.....The Family Service League is more or less a place where young Social Workers just out of college come to get experience.. THEY DO NOT HAVE THE EXPERTISE TO WORK WITH SERIOUS ISSUES......We need Clinical Psychologists, ( NOT SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS )...Psychiatrists ( to work with medication) & Experienced & well Trained Social Workers who accept ALL INSURANCE PLANS....there seems to be a discrepancy with GHI & GHI ( EMBLEM HEALTH ) as well as many other unclear issues....so much RED TAPE that youngsters & adults do not get THE TREATMENT THAT IS NEEDED.....In addition, many members of the community suffer from anxiety issues or life trauma that prevent them from reaching out & getting necessary treatment & medication.....We need professionals who can ASSUME THE ROLE OF HELPING THESE PEOPLE RESTORE THEIR LIVES PERHAPS BY GOING TO THEM & TRYING TO WORK WITH THEM SLOWLY & TRYING TO HELP THEM LEAVE THEIR HOMES & FIND TRANSPORTATION TO ATTEND WEEKLY THERAPY OUT PATIENT SESSIONS. TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THEIR LIVES ....We need professionals who are experienced clinicians who are part of a LARGE INSURANCE NETWORK WHO CAN HELP PEOPLE OF ALL AGES WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUS, ADDICTION ISSUS, BEHAVIORAL ISSUES, LIFE CHANGING CRISIS ISSUS, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, FAMILY ISSUES & PHOBIAS.....WHY DO WE EVEN HAVE TO ASK?......

Affordable out patient mental health facilities staffed by experienced Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers & Psychiatrists should be in place in many of the villages & accessible to people who need the help with individual, & group therapy & medication monitoring.....there is so much wealth in this area & such an emphasis on fine dining & tennis & health clubs & designer fashion & expensive art work .....HOW ABOUT AN INVESTMENT IN PEOPLE & THEIR HEADS & MIND & SUICIDE PREVENTION & BEHAVIOR ISSUES & FAMILIES IN CRISIS & ADJUSTMENT ISSUES, & ALL SORTS OF OTHER MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT ARE ALL PART OF THE DIAGNOSTIC STATISTICAL MANUAL THAT ARE REAL......AND HOW ABOUT GETTING ON BOARD WITH ALL INSURANCE PLANS.....THIS REQUIRES WORK & PEOPLE WHO ARE COMMITTED IN HELPING PEOPLE......HOW ABOUT GETTING THE SOUTHAMPTON CAMPUS OF STONY BROOK UNIV TO INSTALL A LIBERAL ARTS UNDERGRADUATE 4 YEAR PROGRAM SET UP FOR LOCAL PEOPLE WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO GO FAR FOR UNDERGRADUATE WORK.....HOW ABOUT HAVING SOUTHAMPTON COLLEGE ( STONY BROOK ) PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PART TIME LOCAL STUDENTS TO TAKE PART TIME CORE LIBERAL ART COURSES & PERHAPS EARN A BACHELORS DEGREE WHILE WORKING.....BUT THAT WOULD INVOLVE COMMUNITY EFFORT & MONEY & ORGANIZATION & CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY & OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES TO LOCAL RESIDENTS......I THINK IT IS WORTH THE EFFORT BUT THAT TAKES A COMMITMENT BY THOSE WHO HAVE THE POWER & RESOURCES......THE LIRR STOPS WALKING DISTANCE FROM SOUTHAMPTON AT STONY BROOK & IT WOULD ENABLE SO MANY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO WORK & ATTEND SCHOOL PART TIME IN THE EVENING.....SINCE WHEN DID THIS INSTITUTION BECOME A MONOPOLY RESERVED ONLY FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS STUDYING MARINE BIOLOGY.....ISN'T THAT A BIT SELFISH & ALMOST ELITIST.....I DON'T GET IT......THERE ARE CERTAINLY ENOUGH PEOPLE OUT HERE WHO HAVE THE SKILLS & KNOW HOW TO MAKE SOME POSITIVE CHANGES TO HELP PEOPLE MOVE FORWARD.....THATIS HELP THE EVERYDAY WORKING PERSON & NOT JUST THE 1%......

MENTAL HEALTH, HEALTH, EDUCATION & WELFARE ARE ALL PART OF THE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HELPING INDIVIDUALS & FAMILIES.....NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE OUT HERE....IF QUALITY MENTAL HEALTH OUT PATIENT FACILITIES WERE MADE AVAILABLE THAT WERE PART OF ALL ENCOMPASSING HEALTH PLANS, WHY CAN"T THIS COMMUNITY OPEN UP & EXPAND UNDERGRADUATE PART TIME ( MATRICULATED ) & NON MATRICULATED COURSES OF STUDY TOWARD A BACHELORS DEGREE AT STONY BROOK AT SOUTHAMPTON....THERE ARE SO MANY EDUCATORS WITH PHDS & A FEW MASTERS DEGREES WHO WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO WORK AS ADJUNCT INSTRUCTORS OFFERING THEIR EXPERTISE ALMOST THE WAY THE CUNY SYSTEM PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES TO EARN A BACHELORS DEGREE PART TIME ......NOT EVERYONE HAS THE MEANS TO ATTEND SCHOOL FULL TIME & SUFFOLK CC IS A TWO YEAR PROGRAM.....WE NEED A 4 YEAR PROGRAM AVAILABLE & PERHAPS SOME MASTERS PROGRAMS AS WELL....THAT IS CERTAINLY NOT FAIR THAT THAT CAMPUS IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE FEW ELITE GRADUATE STUDENTS STUDYING MARINE BIOLOGY....SOMEHOW, THAT IS JUST NOT FAIR & DOES NOT PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE.....
