Local Couple Celebrates Medical Team Who Saved Wife's Life

Judie Ackerman underwent treatment for a heart attack and stroke.

In 2012, Judie Ackerman faced a difficult journey.

The East Hampton woman had suffered a heart attack and stroke, and found herself at Stony Brook University Hospital's Heart Institute for treatment. But she underwent surgery via the care of Dr. David Brown and Dr. James Taylor, and for that, the Ackermans threw a party earlier this month honoring the medical team that saved her life, SBUH announced this week.

Judie's husband Lenny Ackerman, a local attorney, said in a statement that he was "delightfully surprised to find this level of care so close to home."

“We wanted it known that great care is nearby, in Suffolk County, so we hosted this party to introduce the leadership of Stony Brook Medicine to our community,” he said.

The Ackermans hosted 200 people, including the medical team that saved Judie's life and guided her through a long recovery period.

"Stony Brook was there for us, and everyone who needs them," Lenny Ackerman said.

SBUH's Heart Institute employs 50 full-time and community-based, board-certified cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons, as well as 350 specially trained anesthesiologists, physical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, surgical technologists, respiratory therapists, perfusionists and other support staff.
