The Retreat's Holiday Giving Programs Need Donors

Supporters can help ensure a bright Thanksgiving and holiday season for victims of domestic violence.

Believe it or not, but the holiday season is just around the corner, and The Retreat is launching its annual Holiday Giving programs to help its clients have a happy and bright holiday season.

The Retreat, a domestic violence advocacy organization, sees the demand for services increase during the holidays. "Many women and children find that during the holidays, domestic violence increases due to money problems, and increasing amounts of alcohol and drug use," the non-profit said in a statement. "The most peaceful time of year, sadly, can be the hardest."

Giving can start at Thanksgiving with the Gift Card Drive. The Retreat looks for supporters to give gift cards to local food stores so that clients can shop on their own. Gift cards can be sent to The Retreat at 13 Goodfriend Drive, East Hampton, New York 11937 by Nov. 12.

Also, Suffolk County Legis. Lynne C. Nowick is collecting food for Thanksgiving meals for families served by The Retreat. Canned vegetables and meats, non-perishable food for a Thanksgiving meal, non-alcoholic beverages, as well as paper goods, may be dropped off at Nowick’s District Office at 59 Landing Ave. in Smithtown, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Nov. 22.

The Retreat’s annual Adopt-A-Family Program allows supporters to donate holiday presents or gift cars for a family in need. Call The Retreat’s Holiday Help Line at (631) 329-4398 and ask for Christiana or Lisa, to learn more.

The not-for-profit is a county-wide organization that provides shelter, counseling, advocacy and support services to victims of domestic violence.
