Time is running out, but you can still help make the message clear: The late Marine Lance Cpl. Jordan C. Haerter deserves the country's highest military honor.

An online petition is seeking President Obama to bestow the Medal of Honor of Haerter, a Sag Harbor native who was killed in Iraq five years ago at the age of 19.

As of Saturday evening, 4,230 people signed the petition. The goal was 100,000 by Sunday.

While the goal may seem far away, Haerter's mother, JoAnn Lyles, is hopeful the petition itself will bring attention that Haerter deserves the honor and that he will still be considered.

Haerter and Marine Corporal Jonathan T. Yale shot and stopped a truck packed with 2,000 pounds of explosives that was speeding through a serpentine of concrete barriers on April 22, 2008. The bomb detonated, killing them, but their quick actions saved the lives of 150 Marines and Iraqi soldiers at the Joint Security Station Nasser in Ramadi. Yale is also a subject of the petition.

Haerter and Yale received the Navy Cross, the second highest military honor, in 2009.
