Turbulence - The Artwork of Sheryl Budnik

September 5 – September 26, 2013

Reception:  Saturday, September 7, 5-7 PM

Remember the movie “Swept Away?”  That’s the emotion that one encounters when
looking at Sheryl Budnik’s paintings.
Within moments, the viewer feels drenched in water and really
transported.  Dynamic is an
understatement.  No quiet and calm “au
plein aire” for Budnik.  Her waters are
rough with globs of paint, and turbulence created with rapid brush strokes
changing colors midstream.

I begin a painting with a mindfulness, an intuition about
land or water or a color.  The canvas is
covered in one go, alla prima. I work until I see nothing more to add, then put
down the knife and paint. I don’t proceed according to rules and principles,
but paint in response to what I see on the canvas and feel. The intensity of
the idea is in the room — my job is to get it onto the canvas. I want my work
to be more than a regional expression.
