STOP 555 - Sign The Petition

We Want to Keep This

As their last act before stepping down from power, the Wilkinson majority has hastily scheduled a public hearing, six days before Christmas, on a major zoning change and related application that would turn the beautiful 23 acre area at 555 Montauk highway just east of Amagansett village into a "senior overlay district" invented by an out of state developer who intends to develop a 79 unit luxury housing project there. The three person majority reportedly intends to pass the measures on the same night.  This last gasp of the lame duck administration would repudiate our community's commitments in its citizen-developed 2005 Comprehensive Plan to limit density, preserve community character and valuable agricultural land, minimize traffic and manage our unique natural resources. The measure was pushed through with a minimum of notice to the public,  in ad hoc Town Board resolutions that gave no notice to minority members.

These measures concern everyone in town not only because it is a dreadful precedent but because a similar district could be authorized and applied for in every hamlet, including yours.

All over town, people have begun to protest to the Board, and groups have mobilized to ensure that the measures are not passed. The Town Board is known to have received many letters and e-mails as has the press. The Amagansett Citizens Advisory Committee asked the Board to postpone the hearing. Volunteers at post offices and delis collected signatures. But more needs to be done.
