Ira Barocas for Town Trustee

Whether lucky enough to be born here, or fortunate enough to be “local by choice,” as I am, the reason we are here has long been defined by the beach, clean air, water, light, and open spaces. We all know that our environment defines our lives.

I am a US Coast Guard Licensed Master with 38 years of professional experience worldwide, on everything from charter sailboats, and live-aboard SCUBA vessels to oil field supply ships, paddlewheel party boats and other event vessels carrying up to 600 passengers.  My marine work has included salvage, vessel delivery, commissioning, construction management and boating instruction, and I am also a professional SCUBA instructor. Since I stopped shipping out 3 yearsago, after working on the Gulf oil spill cleanup, I have grown increasingly involved in and concerned about our community. I am the President of the Duck Creek Farm Association and the initiator of East Hampton Town’s Adopt-a-Preserve Program, with Babes Lane Nature Preserve being the first preserve adopted.

I believe that the Trustees serve as the conscience of East Hampton, charged through history with helping to ensure and protect your rights for responsible, respectful access to our beaches, waterways, and to the bounty and preservation of our bottom lands. Your vote for me can put my lifetime of experience on, in, and under the water to work for our Town’s future.

Before going to sea full time, I was a New York City High School Teacher and Dean, and became Chief Truant Officer of Citywide Special Education Programs within the NYC Department of Education. As Your Town Trustee, I will work with common sense and good will to balance our community’s interests with law and traditions so that our families, and their children, especially, and our visitors, will all enjoy East Hampton now and tomorrow.
