Water Main Break Shut Down Water For Nearly 5 Hours

Little damage reported, but bricks around the pipe will be repaired in coming weeks.

Crews worked all night to repair a water main break in East Hampton Village, ensuring that the East Hampton Middle School could open on time on Thursday morning.

The break was reported in front of 71 Newtown Lane on Wednesday evening, and school districts alerted parents and students that there was a possibility the school, which is located at 76 Newtown Ln., would have a delayed start.

But thanks to Suffolk County Water Authority workers, school opened on time.

Tim Motz, the water authority's director of communication, said a hydrant branch, a pipe that connects the main to the hydrant, broke. Water was shut off for between 30 and 60 residents and businesses in the area between 1:15 and 5:50 a.m.

Motz said there was minimal flooding damage, as water was directed to culverts before it was shut off.

Village Deputy Mayor Barbara Borsack said she was not advised of a reason for the break, which may have been caused from stress or age. Motz said the water authority is continuing to investigate. "It's been repaired but the bricks will not be replaced for about a week to give the ground time to settle, so it will be coned off for about a week," she said.
