The Perfect Winter Snack: Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

Keep the kids occupied—and out of the slush—with these chewy oatmeal cookies.

Between Christmas break and December's blustery "Brrricane," the kids have had more than a few days to ransack the backyard and basement playroom. And just when you thought you were in the clear, Mother Nature brought us more snow this weekend.

On any winter day, you may be scratching your head over what to do with—and how to feed–your suddenly snowed-in brood. Keep those hands and mouths occupied with this simple recipe for Old Fashioned Chewy Oatmeal Cookies.

Unlike the store-bought variety, these nutritious treats are packed with whole wheat flour, rolled oats and brown sugar, instead of oodles of refined white carbs that will send your kiddos on a rollercoaster ride of sugar highs...and lows. Plus, you can dress them up with whatever's in your pantry—dried cranberries, raisins, walnuts, chocolate chips, even pomegranate arils—and the beauty is, they only take 10 minutes to prep and about 11 minutes to bake.

Another crafty tip? It's easy to create festive oatmeal snowmen—sans cookie cutters—by simply aligning three doughy stacks right next to each other on the baking sheet. Serve alongside a steaming cup of hot cocoa and pull up a seat in front of the window—they'll be nodding off in no time.
