A crew member on a container ship about 48 miles off of Montauk was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center on Tuesday with an eye injury.
The First Coast Guard District Command Center received word that a 53-year-old crewmember aboard the vessel Dusseldorf Express required medical assistance, since the ship was not pulling into port soon, according to a statement.
An MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod responded. The patient was hoisted into the helicopter and taken to the Long Island hospital.
A video the Coast Guard provided of the rescue is attached here. There is no audio.
"It was great that we were able to assist with getting him off the ship becuause of the medical attention that he needed for his injury," said Petty Officer 1st Class Tye Conklin, a Coast Guard resuce swimmer who assisted.
The patient was listed in stable condition, the Coast Guard said.
