Report: Main Beach Ranked No. 4 in US

Picked on the 2011 list for its blend of natural and man-made environment.

On the annual list of best beaches in the country, East Hampton's is moving on up, according to a report from AOL News Travel. 

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, who is the coastal research director at Florida International University in Miami and is known as Dr. Beach, released his picks for 2011 on Friday.

Main Beach ranks fourth. It's slowly climbing the charts, up from fifth last year.

in Southampton was ranked first in 2010, but Leatherman doesn't consider the top pick the following year. He judges the rest of the beaches on 50 points of criteria, like water and sand quality, safety and environmental management, water temperature, smell and pests.

So why Main Beach? He writes on his website Beachfinder.org, "Main Beach provides the perfect blend of nature and built environment. Wealthy summertime residents flock here to the beaches protected by a conservation easement, dating back over 300 years."

Siesta Beach in Sarasota, FL took the coveted top spot this year.
