Quiet Skies Coalition Holds First Demonstration in East Hampton Village

A small group protests noise, new helicopter routes during busy Saturday.

During a busy holiday weekend that included the Hamptons International Film Festival, a group that is fighting airport noise held its first march in East Hampton Village on Saturday.

About 20 supporters of the Quiet Skies Coalition showed up during the two-hour demonstration. They walked around the village with signs that garnered looks from passers-by. Kathleen Cunningham, the executive director, was careful to instruct supporters they had to keep moving and not block the sidewalks.

"Everything went just fine," she said. "I think on many levels it was just the right number of people - about 20 when all was said and done. Generally, more is better, but, as our first outing for such a demonstration, I thought it went really well."
