Question of the Day: What Do You Think of the Plastic Bag Ban?

Will the ban help the environment or harm businesses?

East Hampton Village voted Tuesday to enact legislation . Mayor Paul F. Rickenbach, Jr. introduced the bill to East Hampton Village trustees after Southampton Village became the first in the state to prohibit plastic bags. Along the way there has been significant dialogue . Proponents of the ban believe plastic bags harm wildlife and induce more careless waste, but opponents note the ban will cause increased operating costs for local businesses, and can be seen as an infringement upon the free market.

Do you believe plastic bags should be prohibited in East Hampton businesses? Are there alternative ways to protecting the environment that is more cost-effective, or has the Village Board not gone far enough? Let us know in the comments below.
