Photos: Swimming to the Rescue

On a foggy day, volunteers show beach-goers how they'll save someone.

Despite the intense fog on the ocean beach just west of Napeague Lane in Amagansett, lifeguards performed a drill on Sunday.

The East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue let beach-goers know they are working hard to make sure they are ready for the summer season and the swimmers in distress they'll get called to help.

With the use of a jet ski in the ocean and a newly acquired all-terrain vehicle to get first responders down the beach quickly, rescuers sprung into action in front of dozens of on-lookers. Afterwards, lifeguards John Ryan, Sr., and John Ryan, Jr., and Steve Brierley from the ocean rescue squad gave them instructions on how to handle such emergencies. Their message was clear: call 911 immediately and be precise about your location so that help can get to you quickly.
