PHOTOS: Sag Harbor Experiencing Serious Flooding Already

Long Wharf, Glover Street among the areas completely flooded by Monday afternoon.

Sag Harbor Village is dealing with some flooding issues already and Hurricane Sandy hasn't even officially arrived.

"We had a high tide at around 10:30," Mayor Brian Gilbride said on Monday afternoon. "We definitely had some issues."

The Long Wharf was closed to traffic as the water flooded over the pier. "We did some work down by the windmill," at the foot of the Long Wharf, the mayor said. Sand was placed around the windmill to try and protect it. "It seems to have worked."

The mayor had already declared a state of emergency and opened a shelter at Pierson High School opened Monday at 9 a.m.

"Other than that, it's the regular low-lying areas," he said.

Glover Street and areas of Redwood have flooded. Water is undercutting West Water Street, which has long dealt with erosion and flooding issues, particularly with strong northeast winds. Some boats even came ashore onto the road with the high tide.

"The back streets are okay. The pumps are working fine," Gilbride said.

The problem is, he said, is that during the course of the storm, Sag Harbor will have to contend with three high tides instead of just one. He's concerned about the next tide coming in "because they are saying this tide won't go fully out."

The Sag Harbor Fire Department went around to residences in low-lying areas to encourage people to seek shelter elsewhere.
