No Changes to Soldier Ride Schedule, For Now

Despite reports of several heat-related injuries during a Soldier Ride Friday near Babylon, event organizers will not make changes to the schedule for Saturday's .

Wounded soldiers will be instructed to only complete the 15-mile trip to Sag Harbor, and not continue the second leg of the trip to Amagansett, according to Peter Honerkamp, one of the event organizers.

Other riders will still have the option to complete the 30- or 60-mile routes, Honerkamp said, and EMT stations and ambulances will be stationed in Sag Harbor.

Early Friday afternoon several ambulances were dispatched to the Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree area to treat "numerous riders with heat-related injuries" participating in the Soldier Ride, according to the ambulance report.

In addition to the checkpoints along the way EMTs will also ride along with the group in specially-distinguished outfits, said Bob Pease, an event organizer.

This week much of the Midwest and East Coast is experiencing a record heatwave, with heat-indexes climbing over triple-digits. The high for Saturday in Amagansett is 88 degrees, which will feel like 93 degrees.

Organizers are requesting that houses along the path to set up sprinklers and hoses, event organizer Joann Lyles said. Organizers overloaded on water this year, and set up a hose with the Sag Harbor Fire Department, Lyles said.

Wounded Warriors supervisors will arrive in Amagansett at around 5 p.m. Friday and will assess the situation Friday evening, but event organizers believe the event will go on as scheduled.
