Montauk Coast Guard: Don't Let the Warm Weather Fool You

The waters around East Hampton are still pretty cold. If you are going to venture out, dress for the water temps, not the air.

The weather is gorgeous for March on the South Fork, with temperatures in the mid-60s, but there's a Catch 22: Concern for boater safety even earlier this season.

The Coast Guard is warning boaters that despite spring-like weather, there's still winter-like water temperatures.

Chief Jason Walter urges everyone to use caution. "I have personally seen kayaks, canoes and paddle boarders out already and want to try and make sure we don't have any tragedies in our area due to lack of education," he said.

Just last week, two boaters capsized in their 16-foot canoe off Harper's Island in Westport, ME. They had to swim to shore in 42 degree waters.

On Monday, the temperature in Montauk was about 58 degrees, 5 to 10 degrees cooler than elsewhere in the Town of East Hampton. The water temperature in the harbor, by the station, were at about 47 degrees, Walter said.

Those on the water should dress for the water temperature, not the air, as hypothermia can set in quickly.

The chief stressed the following:

  • Always file a float plan (time out, time back and area) with a friend or family member and stick to it. If changes occur, let them know.
  • Wear a USCG-approved personal flotation device. Newer, inflatable types are very comfortable for paddling activities without much restriction. Wet suits are not an approved PFD.
  • Watch the area weather. "A lot of the weather comes from news venues near NYC and as we all know on the East End can be very different and can change in a moment's notice," Walters said. Check marine forecast to ensure the most accurate forecast.
