East Hampton Kids Help Break Swimming World Record

About 75 local third and fourth graders participated in the World's Largest Swimming Lesson.

East Hampton area students were apart of breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest swim lesson on Tuesday.

More than 10,000 kids on four continents learned to bob, float and kick during The World's Largest Swimming Lesson, which was put together by water safety and training organizations. Though the lessons website boasted breaking the record, the official numbers won't be released until after all the hosting pools submit their paperwork at the end of the month.

To build awareness of the importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drownings, aquatic facilities and waterparks across the globe simultaneously held large group swims at 11 a.m. ET.

Norma Bushman, the swimming coordinator in , organized the lesson for nearly 75 students. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children ages 1 to 14. Research has shown that that if a child hasn't learned to swim by the third grade, they likely won't, Bushman said.

The third grade at John M. Marshall Elementary School already had a field trip planned for that day, so two classes from the fourth grade joined the lessson. Those students had recently finished a swim program and their progress showed, Bushman said.

The third grade from Montauk School also participated. Bushman hopes its the start of those aged students getting more time in the water.

Bushman got help in the water from swimmers, like members of the East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue Squad.
