Did You See a Meteor Over East Hampton?

Local residents report seeing a flash of light.

A number of East Hampton residents were among the hundreds of people on the East Coast who reported seeing a meteor-like flash of light shortly before 8 p.m.

From Boston to the Carolinas on Friday night, there were hundreds of unconfirmed reports on Twitter and other social media outlets of a meteor-like object.

At least four East Hampton residents reported on East Hampton Patch's Facebook Page that they saw a flash across the sky.

Anke Albert said, "I thought it was a firework thing."

Similar reports were also made across the East End.

Diane Jones reported on Westhampton-Hampton Bays Patch's Facebook page that she and her husband saw it at 7:54 p.m. as they passed by the Westhampton Beach Country Club.

She said, "It was beautiful."

On Southampton Patch's Facebook Lisa Zbar Watson said she spotted at least one meteor breaking up over Oak Grove Road in North Sea.

Patch readers from Cutchogue and Orient on the North Fork also said they saw the flash of light.

A meteor estimated to be about 50 feet wide and weighing more than 10,000 tons exploded over central Russia last month, injuring hundreds with a shockwave that blew out windows and damaged structures across a wide area.

No injuries, or other material impacts were reported Friday night.
