Changed by 9/11: John Healey, Former Fire Department Chief

Wainscott resident realized the true meaning of helping others.

John Healey was already a volunteer firefighter with the on 9/11, but in the years since he has gained a better understanding of public service.

"After seeing the dedication of the emergency service workers, to see their devotion and putting aside their own life to save others was probably the number one thing I took away," Healey said.

He said he realized more fully that complete unselfishness was the key.

"It reiterated the want for needing to help. It kind of brought to light what was in me to want to help," he said. "I get it now."

Healey grew up in New York City, a former model and actor living there until 1997 when he moved full-time to Wainscott. A agent, Healey when onto earn the rank of fire department chief, the youngest ever in department history. He is currently the captain of the .
