2010 Census: Population Drops in East Hampton Village, Montauk

The 2010 U.S. Census is reporting that populations in East Hampton Village, Montauk are on the decline while populations in the town as a whole and in the hamlet of Amagansett and Wainscott rose slightly.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, which released New York numbers on Thursday, East Hampton Village had 1,334 residents in 2000. However, the 2010 census shows that the population has since dropped to 1,083, a decrease of 18.8 percent.

The same is true in Montauk.

There were 3,851 residents in 2000 and in 2010; the census reports there are 3,326, a drop of 13.6 percent.

The population decreases do not trend with national, state and county averages. The United States population jumped 9.7 percent; New York State grew by 2 percent and Suffolk County’s population rose by 5 percent.

Meanwhile, population numbers grew in the Town of East Hampton and in the hamlets of Amagansett and Wainscott.

The 2000 census reported that there were 19,719 residents in East Hampton.  In 2010, that number grew to 21,457, an increase of 8.8 percent. 

In Amaganset, the population grew by 9.1 percent.  The census shows that there are 1,165 residents in Amaganset as of 2010 and there were 1,067 in 2000. In Wainscott, the census shows that in 2000 the population was 628.  In 2010 the number of residents is 650, an increase of 3.5 percent.
