Each year, tens of thousands of people are rescued from the surf, while far too many others are not so lucky. Monday marks the start National Beach Safety week. The beach has dangers that can be effectively managed through public awareness and the vigilance of professional lifeguards. For reasons of public safety, a reminder of the pleasures and hazards associated with the beach are appropriate at the beginning of the busy summer beach season.
