Wallet Won't Rest Easy on $15k Mattress, But You Will

High-end European mattress maker opens pop-up in East Hampton Village.

Just a warning: A visit to Coco-Mat may bring on the need for a nap.

The latest pop-up in East Hampton Village is the high-end mattress company based in Greece that has been making natural, handmade sleep products, namely mattresses, pillows, and bed linens, for over 20 years.

Free of metal springs, Coco-Mat beds are made of multiple layers of materials like coco-nut fibre, natural rubber, wool, cotton, sea grass, horsehair, silk, linen, wood and goose down, all of which are meant to ward off allergens and support the body in an optimal position.

The price tag for this restful sleep? A king size mattress systems runs about $15,000.

The small store is located at 37A Main St., across from the Vered Gallery, just off of the Reutershan parking lot. It replaces the Ross Fine Arts gallery.

The Coco-Mat system is made up of a base, mattress, and top-mattress. "You're supported so all you have to do is just lay down and rest," said Chris Oprysk, who is running the store. He said the right mattress and pillow will eliminate the need to toss and turning, constantly trying to find the right position and angle.

Oprysk said there is no mattress company like this on the South Fork. Sleepy's has several mattress stores throughout the South Fork, including one in Wainscott.

Several models are on display, and available for a demonstration. At the flagship store on Mercer Street in SoHo, there are rooms set aside that can be rented in four-hour blocks for a nap.

Mattresses purchased can be shipped to the South Fork within three days out of a warehouse in New Jersey, but pillow toppers and even customizable pillows are available in-store. Oprysk said pillows are customized with the natural rubber to fit each customer's specific needs — and he can make recommendations based on whether you are a side- or stomach-sleeper. They range from $80 to $300.

The East Hampton store also sells a customizable day bed — "a huge hit so far" Oprysk said — and Pillow Takis, which are floor cushions made out of the same materials as the mattresses. They have become popular dog beds, Oprysk said.

Coco-Mat also sells towels, rugs, and furniture. Those who make a purchase of more than $5,000 will receive a specialized Coco-Mat bicycle.

Coco-Mat is located at 37A Main St., East Hampton. It's telephone number is 631-324-4424.
