Rare Poster of Montauk Goes for Thousands at Auction

Poster depicts Carl Fisher's Montauk.

A rare poster from the 1920s depicting Carl Fisher's Montauk netted several thousand at auction on Friday.

"Montauk Beach," circa 1929, went for $12,500, according to Alexandra Nelson, a spokeswoman for Swann Auction Galleries in New York City.

The poster was estimated to sell for between $12,000 and $18,000.

According to Swann Galleries website, the poster capitalizes on F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Jazz Age," to depict Carl Fisher's plans to create Miami of the north in Montauk. His plan included a luxury hotel, The Montauk Manor, which still exists, golf courses and fox hunting.

The poster shows all Montauk has to offer, including The Manor. "It is an exceptional representation of the tail end of the Roaring Twenties," the gallery said on its website.
