Petition to Keep 'Outdoors' in Amagansett

More than 400 signatures have been collected in a petition to keep the in Amagansett. 

Barry Adelman, who took over the retail clothing, sporting goods and accessories store 15 years ago with his now former partner Steve Schneider, said that he lost his lease for the space at 171 Main Street in Amagansett.

He started a petition last week to show the support of his customers and he promises, "We will stay come hell or high water through the summer." Then, he said, "we'll leave for somewhere in the future. You don't want to stay where you're not wanted." 

Outdoors had a five-year lease with two options to renew, Adelman said. The lease runs out at the end of the month.

A similar store in that location was formerly owned by the LaCarrubba family, which still owns the building. 

Adelman said he learned through the LaCarrubbas' attorney at the end of February that the lease would not be renewed. He claims he was previously told he would get a new one. 

Sal LaCarrubba declined to comment. His broher Joe LaCarrubba could not be reached for comment. 

Adelman said he pays $10,000 a month in rent — a price the LaCarrubba family worked with him on during hard economic times of the past few years, he said.

He runs another Outdoors store in Chester, N.Y.  

Schneider, Adelman's former partner, declined to comment other than to say, "I wish him the best with whatever he does." 

Michael Clarke, who moved to the Amagansett Square, across the street from Outdoors two years ago, said he doesn't want to see the store go.

"it's a mom-and-pop shop. I don't like to see that happening," he said. "People would miss them, not only the locals, but the summer folks, too."
