Petition to Keep 'Outdoors' in Amagansett

Owner says he'll stay "come hell or high water through the summer," but his lease expires April 30.

More than 400 signatures have been collected in a petition to keep the in Amagansett.

Barry Adelman, who took over the retail clothing, sporting goods and accessories store 15 years ago with his now former partner Steve Schneider, said that he lost his lease for the space at 171 Main Street in Amagansett.

He started a petition last week to show the support of his customers and he promises, "We will stay come hell or high water through the summer." Then, he said, "we'll leave for somewhere in the future. You don't want to stay where you're not wanted."

Outdoors had a five-year lease with two options to renew, Adelman said. The lease runs out at the end of the month.

A similar store in that location was formerly owned by the LaCarrubba family, which still owns the building.

Adelman said he learned through the LaCarrubbas' attorney at the end of February that the lease would not be renewed. He claims he was previously told he would get a new one.

Sal LaCarrubba declined to comment. His broher Joe LaCarrubba could not be reached for comment.

Adelman said he pays $10,000 a month in rent — a price the LaCarrubba family worked with him on during hard economic times of the past few years, he said.

He runs another Outdoors store in Chester, N.Y.

Schneider, Adelman's former partner, declined to comment other than to say, "I wish him the best with whatever he does."

Michael Clarke, who moved to the Amagansett Square, across the street from Outdoors two years ago, said he doesn't want to see the store go.

"it's a mom-and-pop shop. I don't like to see that happening," he said. "People would miss them, not only the locals, but the summer folks, too."

Allison, Sorry you feel that way, but we're not burnt out, we're not moody and we have over 1200 signatures on the petition for us to stay. We're offering the same great service we've offered for 15 years. We'll be there for the rest of the summer season and we'd love to have you shop with us in our new location. If you have a specific complaint please give it to Ella, the store manager. Thank you.

The staff IS burnt out, working 70 hrs a week for crap pay. "Managers?" A phony title to obscure inhumane treatment & to justify non-matching wages under OSHA. to Ella & Meg are my family & I see what you're doing to both of them. You're a greedy slavedriver & why either of them feel ANY loyalty to you, is beyond me!! You are a film flam man. Poor me, poor me, look at me...all the while, delivering more lashes to the backs of these employees. No one will notice it happening, if I keep boo hoo hooing & keep the smokescreen of "victim" up. Take a GOOD LOOK at both of these women next time you visit folks. It is PAINFULLY obvious. SHAME SHAME SHAME Mr Adelman. Karma is truly a bitch, may you meet her personally...and SOON!
Barry Adelman July 29, 2012 at 01:41 PM
Penny - I just read your disturbing comment and immediately picked up the phone and talked to both Ella and Megan. I suggest you contact them before you attack me publicly. You are making stuff up and I must say that Ella & Megan are paid fairly and they do not receive any lashes. I've been in business since 1975 and have had hundreds of employees. Both Megan & Ella have been with me for a number of years. Another employee in Chester will be with me 10 years - that doesn't happen by being a "flim flam Man". That happens when you honor and respect your employees as fellow human beings. Maybe because they are "family" to you, you've jumped to conclusions and are looking for an evil person to blame something on, but I can tell you it's not me. I value Ella and Megan's professionalism and loyalty. Your comments were uncalled for and inappropriate.
Penny July 29, 2012 at 09:08 PM
I HAVE spoken to both, daily. 70 hrs plus, no OT pay. No lunch, no breaks, no consideration, because they are "management". You cannot save face with me. I don't know you & don't wish to, but I know your type! You have no respect for either of these young women as you regularly/daily take advantage of them & try to disguise this distasteful truth by portraying yourself as just a poor busnessman under attack by the Lacarrubas and now me. Megan is my niece, we are VERY close. I have watched & heard how you treat employees over the years. Abusing the good natures of Meg & Ella especially so, this year, during your campaign of sainthood. This is a public forum. You choose to give your version of the truth here, I choose to also. Your current success is on the backs of these young women, while you pay them a meager base salary & monopolize their hours because they are "managers". You haven't, spoken to either of them because they would tell you the same. You don't care about them as employees, it's all about the $$$ in your pocket. Have you taken an honest look in their faces?? Look at the exhaustion or have you learned to look past the extreme? They both know how fast seasonal work goes, so they feel stuck & you've seen that opportunity to exploit their loyalty.
Barry Adelman July 30, 2012 at 12:55 PM
I've made many mistakes in my life and one of them is to make assumptions without having all the information. That's what you are doing. But to make it even worse, you make the assumptions in a public forum. Good luck to you, but you'll never get anywhere in life by attacking people you've never met and making assumptions about them and their motivation. That in unacceptable behavior.

Randy Lerner would turn our town into another ritzy seasonal town. THAT IS NOT WHAT IS NEEDED. I agree the Outdoor store needs a renovation, but Gone Local and the Nail Salon? They are locas trying to make money in a hamlet that has turned into 20-somethings trash can. Have you looked at the Stephen Talkhouse? Put your opinions of a "junk shop" on that place. And screw you and your opinion of us "locals" moving to RIverhead... us locals are the reason Amagansett is here; OUR ancestors, not YOURS, created this amazing and beautiful town, and its trash like you that make it trashy. Keep Outdoors, GOne Local, and the nail salon, and ban the idiots like dog.
local December 23, 2012 at 02:13 AM
Local Dog you have no problem enjoying our Eastend and promptly trashing it, but if you don't like us go somewhere else because we wouldn't miss you, but we will miss the OUTDOOR store. My Family and I own quite few properties and you don't own me.
local December 23, 2012 at 02:48 AM
Dog, He has the right to voice his opinion with his signs and letter under the FIRST AMMENDMENT so LOVE or LEAVE it called AMERICA, please leave.
local December 23, 2012 at 03:11 AM
By the way tell the whole story, he's coming to East Hampton. You better make other plans for summer.
local December 23, 2012 at 06:24 PM
Dog, You stereo type people and make a lot of assumption about people, this will come back on you one day. So why don't you go on Craigslist and find something at the Jersey Shore, O I forgot there is no more Jersey Shore. I guess I better raise my rents and take more of your money. thank you
Arnold Timer December 30, 2012 at 10:24 PM
Hey there Dog, I find your comments pretty amusing. I know you think you're on top since you bought some property out here, but the locals still pretty much control your experience here. Probably smart to keep your ID a secret to minimize the number of times the locals spit in your food, pi** in your drink, or poison your lawn (can't really blame them). What's really funny is that you don't even realize you are a walking joke and that 98% of the population is laughing at you. Thanks for the entertainment....
Arnold Timer December 31, 2012 at 12:54 AM
Actually, no. I am a local business owner with an MBA and a waterfront home. My friends and I laugh at you posers. C'mon admit it; you're really The Situation aren't you. Go spend your money on bottle service I'll just keep buying up real estate to protect from us from your ilk (let me know if you need any further explanation).
Arnold Timer December 31, 2012 at 01:07 AM
Oh, and Dog, Keep in mind it's your kind that stupidly pays 30% more than normal people for my services. It's called an AH tax. I am able to convince you you're getting a deal, and I laugh all the way to the bank. Give it it up. You're a joke. See you this summer!
Dr. Bruce D. December 31, 2012 at 11:00 PM
I am sorry that your folks named you dog but it appears an accurate name for you ! this will be the first that you hear from me. I grew up in East Hampton went to school there, graduated and moved to NY I became a doctor and 15 - 20 years ago bought up alot of land and properties there. The locals are what make East Hampton and Amagansett so special. You are a pig headed snob ... You probably are not even who you claim to be ! You probably live in your parents basement ... Your disdain for the locals in this very special second home market is dispicable. If you are who you say you are you have no manners and probably no friends .. I gather that you voted in Mr. Obama for a second term. I must say that it is you that I feel sorry for ! Good day Mutt !

Dr. Bruce I couldn't agree with you more, this thing called DOG is such a low life. All he can do is twist peoples words and belittle them don't bother wasting your time with this DOG he feeds off of other people, he can't say anything for himself or original he is a bottom feeder. LOCAL

you are aware that randy lerner doesnt own this building, isnt the landlord, and has absolutely nothing to do with this matter, right?
tm January 09, 2013 at 05:35 PM

Arnold Timer January 16, 2013 at 01:53 AM
Oh yeah, Lerner knows how to pick 'em. Just look at the championship team that is the Cleveland Browns...BTW Dong; Why is he your hero? Because he inherited his fortune??? Are you too, a member of the lucky sperm club?
Arnold Timer January 16, 2013 at 01:55 AM
I feel free to post now that Dong has promised to no longer respond to my drivel.

To All: Today, Sunday February 10th is our last day of business in Amagansett. Final day sale: 50-75% Off - We'd rather sell it, at or below cost, than pack it and move it. Stop in today for a real bargain. We move on Monday and Tuesday into our new home: 30 Park Place, East Hampton; that is Waldbaum's Parking Lot in the center of the Village. We should be open within 30 days. Thanks for 16 years in Amagansett and thanks for this comment from Anne Mullen: You are heroes! Amagansett will miss you! Best of luck in your move.
