New Muse Opens in Sag Harbor

Matthew Guiffrida's Muse restaurant relocates from Water Mill.

Chef-owner Matthew Guiffrida's much anticipated Muse in the Harbor opened Thursday on Sag Harbor's Main Street, bringing with it the New American cuisine that made its predecessor, , a hit in Water Mill.

Sag Harbor first had a glimpse of Muse — located at the spot that has housed La Maison and JLX Bistro — during on Feb. 11, when the bar was open and complimentary hors d'oeuvres were served. Then last week Muse had an unadvertised "soft opening" to work out any kinks before the grand opening Thursday, Guiffrida said

"Last night went great," Guiffrida said of Thursday's official opening. And his signature design element, a tropic fish tank, was installed just in the nick of time. One of the attractions at Muse Restaurant & Aquatic Lounge was a fish tank bar, and now Muse in the Harbor has an 8-foot-long, 4-foot-high African cichlid tank in the middle of the dining room managed by Noel Rose of Anchor Aquarium Service.

In addition to the new fish tank, the interior of the restaurant was overhauled, with new driftwood floors, a large banquette and renovated bathrooms. According to LongIslandRestaurantNews.com, "Guiffrida has kept one remnant of the old space — the French doors — providing an open and airy dining atmosphere."

The new Muse has an 80-seat capacity, compared to the 30 Guiffrida had in Water Mill. But he's not worried about filling the seats. "Sag Harbor's such a busy bustling town," he said, noting that as he looks outside on Friday afternoon there are no open parking spaces on Main Street, even in March.

While some have warned him that the restaurant location is "cursed," considering the demise of La Maison and JLX Bistro, Guiffrida said, "We signed a nice long lease. We're not planning on going anywhere."

Throughout March, Muse will be open Wednesday through Sunday starting at 5 p.m. with a $28.95 three-course prix fixe all night Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and until 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Guiffrida said in April the schedule will include brunch and the hours will keep expanding from there.

Appetizers are priced from $8 to $18, entrees from $19 to $38 and desserts for $8.
