Nellie's of Amagansett Antique Fair Runs This Friday and Saturday

From furniture to children's books, and from objet to knick-knacks the front yard sale at Nellie's has a wide selection.

Nellie’s of Amagansett, the local antique shop on 230 Main Street, is holding its annual antique fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Friday and Saturday, July 5 and 6.

Connie Dankmyer, owner and operator of Nellie’s, which she named after her first grandchild, has been holding the sale for the past six years. Though the event usually takes place around the Fourth of July, this year had the good fortune of falling on the Friday and Saturday immediately following the Thursday holiday.

Referring to the group of antique vendors set up outside her store front as her friends, Dankmyer said, “Everybody came to me saying they wanted to sell things. I told them ‘I’m going to give you my yard, and I don’t need a penny.’”

Referring to the bright sunshine and heat that sends tourists and townspeople alike to the beach, Dankmyer added, “I hope they’re selling, it’s hard work out there.”

Nellie’s, which has been in Amagansett in one location or another since 1992 first moved to 230 Main Street in 2000. Asked to describe her selection of antiques, Dankmyer said, “We carry a mix of very simple, early techniques. Our items are a mix of old and new, but nothing too dark or Victorian.”

Though Dankmyer’s best sellers are antique maps of New York and Long Island, which she sells both framed and unframed for travellers, she is also quite proud of her selection of hand hammered steel plates and cutlery made by Mary Yorick — “You don’t have to polish them,” she said— and the handmade ceramics from California artisan Alex Marshall. Other items found around the shop include handmade chandeliers and lighting fixtures, teak furniture, handmade Windsor chairs from Rhode Island, wire baskets, doll furniture and folk art like old signs and game boards.

Nellie’s is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. For more information call the store  at (631) 267-1000.
