East Hampton Waldbaum's Avoids Chopping Block

Six Waldbaum's proposed for closure across Long Island, though the location in the heart of the village isn't one of them.

Though six Waldbaum's across Long Island are proposed for closure in the near future in the wake of its parent company filing for bankruptcy, the  in the village will not be one of them.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, which owns Waldbaum's and a handful of other grocery chains across six states, has closed more than 50 stores since late 2010 in an effort to emerge from Chapter 11, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal - in turn, A&P has shed close to 5,000 employees of a payroll that once neared 40,000.

Stores proposed for closure on Long Island include , Huntington Station, Rockville Centre, East Islip, West Babylon and Lake Ronkonkoma. In addition, eight other stores are slated for closure in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

"We are continuing to take the steps necessary to position A&P to emerge from Chapter 11 with a strong future and ensure that we remain focused on our top priority -- providing great value and service to our customers every day," said A&P President and Chief Executive Officer Sam Martin. "While this was a very difficult decision that will unfortunately impact some of our customers, partners, associates and the surrounding communities, these actions are absolutely necessary as we continue to strengthen A&P's operating foundation and improve our performance."

The proposal is subject to court approval in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.
