5 Places To Take Self-Defense Classes

After last week's alleged attempted abduction at Long Beach, learning self-protective skills may be on your agenda.

Last week, was approached by a man who asked for directions and then put his arm around her and tried to lead her into his car. said she hit him with her iPod and ran to dial 911.

The incident serves as a reminder that even the safest of towns are not without scary incidents. Many women are wondering — will I be able to protect myself if caught off guard by a stranger?

If you are interested in self-defense, there are several classes and workshops offered nearby. Here are five:

1. At in North Sea, Shotokan Black Belt karate instructor Helene Ely offers self-defense workshops on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The fee is $15. Ladies must sign-up in advance, otherwise the class is regular karate instruction. Ely said she teaches simple self-defense moves focused on balance and diversion. Unless you practice martial arts, she said, intricate moves won't come to you when you're in panic mode. Private group classes are also available.

2. in East Hampton offers an hour and a half program that teaches Small Circle Jujitsu, a martial art geared for "Street Self Defense." As an added bonus, participants will also get into great shape. The website offers a full class schedule.

3. A few times a year, Epic Martial Arts in Sag Harbor offers women self-defense workshops. The next will be offered in the spring, but in the meantime, you can take part in kickboxing and self-defense classes. For more information, check out the website.

4. In Hampton Bays, studio integrates self-defense into adult classes that are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. Classes are 45 minutes and focus on a wide variety of self-defense tactics, including joint manipulation and pressure points. Memberships are available for $89 per month, according to Paul Mazzarella, the chief instructor.

5. of Westhampton Beach teaches self-defense classes at in Patchogue and provides at the Dance Center of the Hamptons, located on Old Riverhead Road in Westhampton Beach.
