10 Gifts You May Not Have Considered

Just one week left until Christmas, and like a lot of people, you probably still need to go shopping. Well, here's some inspiration: 10 specific gifts you probably haven't thought about for those on your Christmas list. All of the gifts can be found locally, so there's still time to get them. From food to jewelry, beehives to music, the categories and prices run the gammon, so you're sure to find at least something for that hard-to-buy-for person. Have other suggestions? 1. Anke's Fit Bakery Granola

For the health conscious person on your list, why not give them something their taste buds will appreciate. Made locally by Anke Albert, she sells them in a pretty cellophane package at Jack's Coffee in Amagansett, Sylvester & Co. in Sag Harbor, Juicy Naam in Sag Harbor, and Sweet' tauk in Montauk. You can also find the granola and other products at the Sag Harbor Farmers Winter Market every Saturday morning in December. Price: $8 to $20.

2. ARF Merchandise

You don't have to adopt an animal to support the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons in Wainscott. But you can give the gift of ARF. There is a selection of merchandise, from an ARF Pet Calendar ($25) to items in the ARFmart, new this year. 3. The Hamptons & Long Island Homegrown Cookbook

This cookbook includes profiles, recipes and photos, and "takes the reader on a private tour of outstanding chefs & artisanal growers of the Hamptons & Long Island." It's available at Foody's in Water Mill — owned by Springs resident Bryan Futerman. Price: $20

4. Membership to Goat on a Boat

For the children on your list, a membership to Goat on a Boat Puppet Theatre is a unique, fun gift they'll enjoy for the year to come. Among only 50 establish puppet theatres in the country, this Sag Harbor-based non-profit hosts visiting puppeteers from throughout the East Coast. Price: $50 for a family membership, which entitles them to 10-percent off every ticket purchased, Puppet Play Group punch card privileges, 10 percent off birthday parties and 10 percent off gift certificates.

5. Art Block Puzzles

For the artist enthusiast, an art block puzzle for sale at Golden Eagle in East Hampton are both fun and a pièce de résistance all at the same time. Pomegranate block puzzles feature self-portrait by Chuck Close and van Gogh. They includes 12 two-inch square blocks which can flipped and turned to form six different artworks. Price: $19 to $23

6. Dog Tag with Tracks

Maidstone Jewelry's owner David Posnett makes an assortment of jewelry, some of which he sells on Etsy, but these dog tags stood out to us for dog lovers. The "dog tag with tracks" comes in sterling silver on a snake chain and measures about 1 X .25-inches. The finish can be high gloss to brushed and mat, and they also come in bronze. Your dog's name can be inscribed on the plaque, as well. Price: $70 (extra fee for engraving).

7. Vintage 'Montauk' Boards

Willow in Montauk sells vintage 'Montauk' sign boards that are based on designs from old postcards. The boards come in two sizes and can be shipped anywhere. They are surely the perfect gift for anyone who loves Montauk. Price: $75 - $89

8. Beekeeping Supplies

There are folks out there who have always wanted to start a hive of their own. BonacBees, a local company that supplies beekeeping supplies, beeswax candles, and raw honey, has what they'll need. Owner Deborah Klughers will tell you all about the modern Langstroth hive. She's also available to manage the honeybees. In fact, you have to order packaged honeybees and a queen to be installed to the new hive come spring, so the timing is perfect. Price: $200

9. Gift of Music

How often have you heard someone say, "I've always wanted to play the guitar." They can learn and you can give them a few lessons — at Crossroads Music that is. Piano, drums, guitar, violin flute, even vocal lessons, are all available at the store in the Amagansett Square. Plus, it's locally owned and operated, so you are supporting local commerce, as well. 10. Make a Donation in Someone's Name

Give the gift of helping others to someone on your list. Here's just one example (and there are plenty of non-profits to pick from in our community): If you know an equestrian, they might appreciate having a donation made in their name to the Center for Therapeutic Riding of the East End. Based in Sagaponack, CTREE's mission is to provide therapeutic riding lessons and equine-assisted activities to children and young adults with cognitive, emotional and physical challenges. The organization underwrites 70 percent of the cost of every rider's lesson and nearly two-thirds of the riders receive additional financial aid from scholarships, the group said in its annual appeal.
