School News for the Week

East Hampton High School
On June 1,  senior Melanie Mackin, accompanied by Principal Adam Fine, flew to Washington D.C. with an assortment of local WWII veterans as part of the ‘Honor Flight” program. “Melanie was chosen because of her deep commitment to this school community, and as president of the Student Association,” Mr. Fine said.

The varsity sports awards banquet was held June 5, honoring the year’s most dedicated athletes.

The end-of-the-year senior barbecue and carnival takes place today, June 6, on the high school field. Seniors will be invited out first to partake of the feast and festivities, followed by the rest of the school about an hour later. “It’s going to be a great day,” said Principal Adam Fine, only with a lot more exclamation points.

A bake sale today will be held at the high school to benefit a food service worker and single mother who has been diagnosed with cancer. All donations of baked good will be welcomed and can be dropped off in the Main Office before noon.

Artist Camille Perrottet will be back to discuss the Anti-Bias mural planned for the high school, on Friday, June 14, after school.  Mme. Perrottet, along with the leaders of many student-run clubs like the National Art Honors Society, are coming up with vocabulary words to include in the mural.

Bonac Botanicals has a successful plant sale last weekend in spite of the wind and cold. Money raised, estimated at about $1800, from the sale will go toward building a shed in the school’s edible garden.

Five of Patty Conigliaro’s math students participated in the Mega Moody Math Challenge as a team, spending “14 grueling hours” competing online against other national high school teams to solve a real-life problem using math skills – in this case, how to improve recycling. The students – Courtney Dess, Ian Lynch, Lucas Escobar, Carly Grossman, and Elias Van Sickle – received certificates for “their hard work and fortitude,” said Ms. Conigliaro.

Any local organization seeking volunteers for their events this summer (in exchange for community service hours) should contact Deb Mansir at 329-6462 before June 20.

East Hampton Middle School
Yesterday kicked off with a seventh grade trip to spend the day at the Mystic Seaport Museum and Aquarium. The students departed from Montauk on a Hel-Cat II, enjoyed the day, including lunch on the Seaport Green, and then returned to the South Fork last evening.
Next Wednesday, June 12, the Middle School plans an evening awards ceremony for students and their parents or guardians, focusing on academic and area achievement awards and other school and community awards such as those from the LVIS, PTA, VFW, and other community organizations. The event will begin at the school at 7 p.m.

John M. Marshall Elementary School
The fourth grade spring concert was held on Tuesday, June 4, and the fifth grade concert will begin tonight at 7 p.m. at the school. Come and see our talented musicians perform!
The next day, Friday, is the much-anticipated Field Day, where teams will compete in different games, all in good fun. The day starts at 10 a.m. on the JMMES fields.
Ms. Anderson’s kindergarten class is in need of costumes for the class play on Monday, June 10. If any readers happen to have crab, turtle, angel fish, octopus, or lobster costumes hanging around in the attic, or are willing to construct one, please let the school know.
Throughout the year, Linda Reiser’s fifth grade computer classes have been learning about hazardous electronic waste, and most recently, about reducing, reusing, and recycling. Using Edmodo.com, students have been communicating online about different projects ideas. Some of the project proposals include having a clothing drive in conjunction with Project MOST, using tire rims as planters around the school, a glass recycling skit for the All-School Meeting, composting, and a “make your own household cleaners” brochure, among many others.
