A Labor of Love at EHHS

The EHHS Justice League wow school with suicide prevention cards.

It was an astonishing sight as students and faculty entered the East Hampton High School this morning.

Peeking out of the top of every locker, stashed in every teacher's inbox, were folded cards that read "You Are Loved."

The 1,500 cards were the brainchild of East Hampton High School's Justice League -- led by Sarah-Jane Lynn and Serrana Mattiauda, and the cards were designed by Justice League students and printed up at Vistaprint.

When opened, the cards contain a quote from the Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh - "To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don't need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself." -- in English and Spanish, along with phone numbers for the Suicide Hotline and the Teen-to-Teen Hotline.

"They raised the money to print the cards through bake sales," said the group's advisor, Barbara Boylan. Justice League members showed up early this morning before class to place the cards all over the high school.

Surrounding the heart on the cover are other affirmations for students and staff to carry with them throughout the day and beyond: You matter. You are beautiful. Believe in yourself. Be who you are.

Thanks, Justice League.

It is a beautiful thing for the Justice League to do. Unfortunately there are some students there who are using the kind gesture to bully and harass other students. They are throwing many of these cards into a student's locker who is bisexual. Luckily he is a confidant boy and brushed it off. This can't be tolerated. If you see something, say something.

A wonderful gesture by a caring group of students.
