Sag Harbor Budget Passes; 4 Elected

Tice, Hartnett, Diskin and Kinsella are top vote getters.

Sag Harbor School District voters approved a $35,508,622 budget Tuesday for the 2013-14 school year, which include a 3.88 percent increase in annual spending and a 3.78 percent bump in the tax levy.

The budget was given the green light by a vote of 825 to 377.

There were six candidates on the ballot for four seats. The two with the most votes get full three-year terms while the third and fourth place winners will finish out the last two years of unexpired terms.

Incumbents Chris Tice and Susan Kinsella retained their seats on the School Board, while a third incumbent on the ballot, Edward Drohan, fell short.

Daniel Hartnett, who previously served two terms, between 2005 and 2011, was returned to the board and newcomer David Diskin was elected to his first term.

Hartnett, with 741 votes, and Kinsella, with 696, were the two top candidates and they each received a full term. Earning abbreviated terms of two years were Diskin, in third with 689 votes, and Tice, right behind with 680.

Edward Drohan has 514 and Thomas Re had 423.

There were two write-in votes for Steve Clarke.

In addition to the budget, voters also approved two ballot propositions.

Busing for students living between 1 and 15 miles from their school was approved 865 to 309.

An expenditure of $1,113,600 to repair the elementary school roof and the high school gymnasium roof and bleachers was approved 910 to 268.  The bulk of the money, $873,600, comes out of the Facilities Renovation Capital Reserve Fund and the remainder is in the 2013-14 budget.
