UPDATE: Crash Leaves 3, Including 6-Year-Old, with Serious Injuries

An accident occurred on Route 114 and Deer Haven Court in East Hampton around 6:15 p.m.

This story was written by Taylor K. Vecsey and Christine Sampson.

Update, 7:30 p.m.:
A mother and her 6-year-old child are being treated for serious injuries after a head-on collision on Route 114 in East Hampton on Saturday evening, according to Town Police Chief Ed Ecker.

"We don't necessarily believe it's going to be fatal," Lt. Chris Hatch said at the scene. However, police are reconstructing the accident due to its serious nature. Route 114 is shut down between South Breeze Drive and Daniel's Hole Road while police investigate. Hatch said traffic will be diverted for the next few hours.

A Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck heading north on Route 114 swerved over the double yellow line, striking a BMW heading south, near Deer Haven Court, at about 6:15 p.m.  The truck rolled over coming to a rest on its wheels nearly facing south. The front end of the BMW's driver's side was completely smashed in,  and East Hampton Fire Department's heavy rescue squad had to remove the roof to free the mother, Hatch said. The child, who was in the backseat, was taken out of the vehicle without the help of the heavy rescue squad.

The man driving the pick-up was taken to Southampton Hospital, as was the child.  The mother was flown to Stony Brook University Hospital. A Medevac helicopter landed at East Hampton Airport at 7 p.m., and East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance Association left the scene with the woman just a minute later en route to the airport.

Asked if sun glare may have contributed to the accident, Hatch said it was a possibility.

Last summer, a Virginia man was killed after a head-on collision on Route 114, not far from where Saturday's accident occurred. Douglas Foster Schneiderman, a 51-year-old developer from Mclean, was killed when a Ford pick-up truck hit his Volvo near South Breeze Drive on July 29 just after 12:30 p.m.

Correction: The child was not extricated from the vehicle a previously reported.

Previously, 6:43 p.m.:
A reported head-on collision on Saturday evening has shut down Route 114 in East Hampton.

The accident was reported at Deer Haven Court around 6:15 p.m. Two people were reportedly trapped in the vehicles.

The East Hampton Fire Department's heavy rescue squad was called to extricate and East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance Association responded with at least two of its ambulances.

A Medevac helicopter was requested to East Hampton Airport, however, the helicopter was already in use, flying to Havens Beach in Sag Harbor after an accident on Hampton Street, at Jermain Avenue.

Dispatchers were working to see if they could get the other helicopter from further west.
